Violin from the Johann Brandner Workshop, c.1907

A characterful early 20th-century violin from Schönbach (now Luby, Czech Republic), attributed to the workshop of Johann Brandner. This instrument represents the well-established Bohemian workshop tradition, known for producing reliable and musically effective instruments for a wide range of players.

The violin bears two internal labels. The primary workshop label reads “Joh. Brandner, Musikinstrumenten… Schönbach-Stadt, Böhmen” with a serial number (No. 353) and a date appearing as 1907 (partially obscured). A second label, “Anno 1757 Carlo Bergonzi, fece in Cremonae,” reflects a common practice of the period, referencing a celebrated Cremonese model rather than indicating authorship.

Built on traditional Schönbach lines, the instrument features cleanly worked arching, neatly inlaid purfling, and an attractive amber-brown varnish showing natural wear and patina. The overall workmanship is consistent with organised workshop production, with careful hand finishing.

Tonally, the violin offers a clear, focused sound with warmth in the lower register and a bright, responsive upper range.

Professionally set up in our workshop, the violin is in good playing condition and ready for immediate use.

The back in two pieces of maple of medium curl descending across the back from the center joint, the ribs of similar curl. The pegbox and scroll of plain maple. The front in to matching pieces of spruce of medium grain in the centre, broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a warm amber, orange-brown color on a light yellow-brown ground.
