A fine contemporary violin by Ben Conover.
Ben initially trained as a musician, first with piano then moving onto violin and viola; his mother was an excellent pianist and his father was a violin maker in America, music and violin making are in his blood and it shows! He studied violin at the prestigious Purcell School of Music, later he went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to study viola, his teachers included Emanuel Hurwitz, John White, and Detlef Hahn. After working as a violist Ben decided to move away from London and retrain as a violin maker. In 1994 he apprenticed to Nigel Harris for two years making new instruments. Then followed three busy years of intense study at Newark for violin making and restoration.
This thorough training as a player and maker has given Ben a love and insight with a practical understanding of the instruments he makes today.
Since moving to rural Ireland in 1998 he has devoted himself to producing top-quality violins, violas, and cellos. In recent years he has taken up bow making and has proved a very fine bow maker. The wood and all materials are top quality, he makes his own varnish.
The attractive back in a single piece of maple of irregular medium curl, the ribs of even medium curl, the pegbox and scroll of almost plain maple. The front of spruce of medium grain in the treble broadens towards the bass flank. The varnish of a rich, warm orange-brown colour on an amber ground.
