An Exceptional Modern British Instrument: Viola by Nigel Harris (Wells, Somerset, 1991)
We are delighted to offer a magnificent viola crafted in 1991 by the highly regarded English luthier Nigel Harris at his workshop in Wells, Somerset. Known for his deeply resonant, acoustically optimized instruments, Harris’s work is highly sought after by discerning orchestral players and chamber musicians alike.
This particular 1991 model represents modern British instrument-making at its finest, combining rigorous acoustic design with a rich, responsive tonal profile.
Performance & Provenance
Instruments are truly shaped by the hands that play them. For years, this viola has been the primary tool of a celebrated, conservatory-trained British violist and conductor.
Having undergone postgraduate study under undisputed masters of the instrument (including Max Rostal and Cecil Aronowitz), the previous owner used this viola to anchor a highly distinguished career. It has been proven and tested at the absolute highest levels of musical performance, including:
- Solo Concertos: Used in public performances of major repertoire works, including concertos by Walton, Telemann, Stamitz, Paganini, and Bartók.
- Chamber Music: Played extensively in professional string quartet configurations and high-profile chamber recitals.
- Notable Recitals: Featured in premier solo recitals, including critically acclaimed performances at prestigious London venues such as the Purcell Room.
To play this viola is to step into a lineage of elite British music-making. It has a fully broken-in, matured voice that responds effortlessly to the demands of solo and chamber literature.
Characteristics & Tone
- Tone: Deep, dark, and robust C-string resonance, paired with a shimmering, expressive upper register that projects effortlessly across recital halls.
- Condition: Maintained in excellent professional playing condition, possessing the character and subtle varnish wear expected of an instrument that has been loved and played on major stages for decades.
This viola is an ideal choice for an advanced conservatory student, an aspiring professional, or an active chamber musician looking for an instrument with a verified pedigree and a powerful, mature voice.
