Violin bow by Thibouville-Lamy probably by Jean Joseph Martin c.1870

Jean Joseph Martin was born in 1837 and passed away in 1910. He was a renowned French bowmaker hailing from Mirecourt, France, and is widely regarded as one of the most exceptional bowmakers of the 19th century. Violinists and cellists alike hold his bows in high esteem, eagerly seeking them out.

At a young age, J.J Martin embarked on his journey as a bowmaker. By the time he reached 21, he found himself working under the tutelage of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, a highly esteemed luthier of that era. Over the course of five years spent with Vuillaume, Martin had the privilege of learning from some of the most esteemed bowmakers in the world.

In 1863, Martin returned to Mirecourt and established his own workshop. It didn't take long for him to establish himself as one of France's premier bowmakers, attracting musicians from all walks of life. The craftsmanship, balance, and playability of Martin's bows were highly valued by musicians. These bows were known for producing a rich, powerful sound and allowing for a wide range of articulation.

Martin's bows are coveted by musicians at all skill levels and are considered to be among the finest ever created.
