Cello Bow by Nicolas Remy Maire, Paris c.1840 with Pierre Testa certificate

Nicolas Rémy Maire, born in 1800 and passed away in 1878, was a renowned French bow maker recognized as one of the most exceptional craftsmen of the 19th century. Hailing from Mirecourt, France, Maire received his training as a bow maker in Étienne Pajeot's workshop. In 1826, he established his own workshop but unfortunately had to close it down in 1830 due to the economic downturn triggered by the July Revolution.

Subsequently, Maire relocated to Paris, where he collaborated with various other bow makers, such as Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume and Georges Chanot, while continuing to create bows under his own name. During the 1850s, Maire's style underwent a transformation, gradually resembling the bows crafted by Dominique Peccatte. He also ventured into producing bows with a lighter weight and a more flexible stick.

Maire's bows have gained immense admiration for their exceptional artistry and remarkable sound quality. Renowned for their potent and melodious tone, they are highly regarded for their responsiveness and playability.

The round stick of amourette (snakewood) of a dark orange-brown colour, showing some lighter orange-brown on the top, later silver mounted ebony frog inlaid with pearl eye and encircled by pearl concentric ring.  Three-part silver adjuster inlaid with pearl eye.

Unbranded.
