Ludwig Neuner was born in 1840 and died in 1897. He is the son of Johann Neuner (III) and received his skills and knowledge from his father. His musical talent was showcased through playing the cello. He gained experience under the tutelage of Andreas Engleder in Munich, Gabriel Lembock in Vienna, and worked alongside J.B. Vuillaume in Paris. In 1867, he initiated a branch of the family business in Berlin, and later in Innsbruck, Austria.

Upon his father's death in 1883, Ludwig returned to Mittenwald to assume leadership of Neuner & Hornsteiner. His excellent craftsmanship earned him the privilege of serving as a maker for the Bavarian royal family, and he garnered numerous accolades at exhibitions worldwide. The experience and insights he gained during his period at Vuillaume’s workshop resulted in a resurgence of the Neuner & Hornsteiner enterprise. Due to this rejuvenation, the firm was able to employ 200 artisans, manufacturing a myriad of instruments catering to students and soloists alike, inspired by traditional Italian designs.

In addition to instruments, the firm produced bows in great quantities, offering various levels of quality.
