Ben Conover – Fine Contemporary Viola Bow

This powerful contemporary viola bow by Ben Conover, after Maire, has a top-class stick for advanced and professional players who favour strength, stability, and a commanding sound. At 74.8 grams with exceptionally strong Pernambuco from the estate of Robert Pierce, it offers huge tonal reserves and precise control under a firm hand.

Modelled after Maire, the bow follows a classical French pattern known for its robust head and firm, disciplined stick geometry, favouring projection and clarity over extreme lightness. The design will appeal to players who like to lean into the string and exploit a focused, highly articulated sound across the full dynamic spectrum.

With a weight of 74.8 g and a notably strong stick, this bow is built for the experienced violist who uses a substantial right-hand technique and expects the bow to remain stable under pressure at the frog, in the middle, and at the tip. The stiffness and mass translate into a powerful core to the sound, secure legato at the heel, and reliable control in martelé, sautille and other demanding strokes when driven with confidence.

The stick is crafted from high-quality Pernambuco selected from the estate of Robert Pierce, offering excellent density, resilience and acoustic responsiveness. This provenance underlines both the quality of the wood itself and the bow’s positioning as a best-grade contemporary example for serious professional use.

This Conover Maire-model viola bow is best suited to strong, technically secure players who prefer a firm, non-forgiving stick that rewards decisive, well-supported bowing. It is an outstanding choice for principal and section leaders, soloists, or advanced students seeking a bow that emphasises projection, control, and tonal authority in demanding repertoire.

The octagonal stick of Pernambuco of a dark red-brown colour. Silver mounted on ebony frog inlaid with pearl eyes, three-part silver mounted on ebony adjuster.
