Made by John Furber around 1830, this instrument features its original classical period neck-now carefully reshaped-and is likely the work of Matthew Furber, a distinguished member of the Furber family known for his adaptability and skill in meeting the demands of the 19th-century London market. John Furber was a respected London luthier, active in the early 19th century, recognised for producing honest, well-made instruments for the thriving London trade.

Constructed from plain but quality tonewoods, this violin reflects the Furber family’s practical yet skilled approach, typical of English trade instruments from the era. The violin is notable for its attention to detail and reliable construction, hallmarks of the Furber dynasty, whose instruments remain valued by musicians for their unpretentious charm and tonal character.

The back is made from a single piece of maple with medium curl descending from bass to treble, while the ribs, pegbox, and scroll display a subtler figure. The top consists of two matched pieces of spruce with medium grain. Its varnish is a warm orange-brown laid over a yellow-brown ground, contributing to its attractive period appearance.

Dimensions:

Back length: 356 mm

Upper bout: 166 mm

Middle bout: 112 mm

Lower bout: 205 mm

This violin embodies the enduring appeal and tonal warmth of early 19th-century English craftsmanship, making it a fine example of the Furber family's legacy.
