Ben Conover – Fine Contemporary Viola Bow
A fine contemporary viola bow in the Panormo style with Tourte camber is an articulate, high-performance tool designed for professional violists who demand clarity, power, and nuanced control. Weighing 68.2 grams and mounted in silver on an Elforyn frog, it combines a focused, soloistic response with refined handling characteristics.??
Ben Conover is a modern bow maker specialising in individually crafted bows for violin, viola, cello and bass, working entirely by hand to achieve precise playing characteristics and consistency. This viola bow is conceived on a Panormo-inspired model, favouring a strong, classical head and elegant proportions that support a full, projecting tone and secure articulation.?
The Tourte-style camber gives the stick a sophisticated distribution of stiffness, with a strong, stable head and resilient middle section that supports clean spiccato, reliable off-the-string strokes, and a wide dynamic range without collapse under pressure. At 68.2 g, the bow sits comfortably in the standard professional viola range, offering sufficient mass for tonal depth while retaining agility for fast string-crossing and nuanced bow changes at the frog.?
The frog is crafted from Elforyn, a high-grade synthetic ivory substitute that closely replicates the look and fine grain of natural ivory while providing excellent mechanical strength and durability. Silver mountings complete the presentation, adding stability and mass at the frog, which contributes to a refined balance in the hand and a discreetly luxurious aesthetic suited to a top-level contemporary bow.?
This bow will suit expert violists seeking a focused, projecting sound with a firm yet responsive stick that rewards sophisticated bow technique. Its combination of Panormo-inspired modelling, Tourte camber and high-spec contemporary materials makes it equally at home in orchestral principal work, chamber music, and concerto repertoire.??
The octagonal stick of Pernambuco of an orange-brown colour. Plain silver mounted on elforyn frog, plain silver top slide, three-part silver mounted on elforyn adjuster.
