An exceptional piece of British heritage, this violin bow combines the elite workshop standards of W.E. Hill & Sons with the highly collectible handiwork of master bow maker Sydney Braithwaite Yeoman (1876–1948).Featuring a rare, luxurious silver and tortoiseshell mount, this bow represents the absolute pinnacle of early 20th-century English craftsmanship.
Provenance & Performance History
This bow has an exemplary professional background, serving for years as the primary performance bow for an accomplished British chamber musician, featured soloist, and dedicated ensemble coach.
Its handling and acoustic qualities have been thoroughly proven across a lifetime of active professional use, including:
Refined Chamber Collaborations: Trusted to deliver the nuance, clarity, and rapid articulation required for complex string ensemble and chamber repertoire.
Soloistic Demands: Utilized for its outstanding projection and reliable tracking in featured concerto performances.
Decades of Continuous Playing: Maintained in the hands of a working professional and educator, ensuring the stick remains perfectly balanced, responsive, and active.
The Master Maker: Sydney Yeoman
Within the legendary Hill workshops at Hanwell, Sydney Yeoman was regarded as one of the most naturally gifted craftsmen of his era. Apprenticed under the guidance of Samuel Allen and William C. Retford, Yeoman’s individual work is highly prized by players and collectors today. His bows are famously identified by a proprietary single-nick mark hidden within the lower mortise of the stick.
The silver and tortoiseshell-mounted fittings on Hill bows are highly significant. While gold fittings were often produced for show or export, the silver and dark tortoiseshell pairings were traditionally reserved for Hill’s finest, most meticulously chosen pernambuco sticks—focusing strictly on optimal density, flexibility, and playability.
Playability & Physical Characteristics
The Stick: Crafted from exquisite, dense pernambuco wood of the highest selection. It possesses an ideal combination of strength and suppleness, allowing the player to pull a deep, rich, and sophisticated tone from the strings.
The Frog: A magnificent work of art in its own right, carved from beautiful dark tortoiseshell that exhibits stunning translucence under the light, elegantly accented by flawless silver fittings.
Handling Profile: Exceptionally well-balanced with a nimble, immediate response. It tracks beautifully across the strings, offering an effortless articulation in fast spiccato passages while maintaining a solid, velvety grip on the string for sustained sostenuto lines.
