The name CHD stands for tradition.
The ancestors of the current owner, J. DIETER HOPF luthier, lived in Klingenthal / Markneukirchen. The name HOPF first appeared in 1669 in instrument making. The first detectable luthier of the Hopf family was CASPAR HOPF (1655-1716). His direct descendant CASPAR HOPF II (1677-1711) has long been regarded as the principal talent of this family of makers. Master Tradition – Since that time the skills and expertise have always been passed from father to son – a legacy that was by the early death August Hermann Hopf (1859-1884) unfortunately interrupted.  ERNST MAX HOPF (1882-1956) learned the profession of string maker and founded a firm of E.Max Hopf, string makers in 1906. His son WILLY HOPF (1906-1990) string makers were incorporated in 1932 and acquired a Saitenmacherei instrument building workshop. In 1948, for political reasons, the company relocated to Taunusstein-Wehen. Under the name WILLY HOPF & CO they produced strings, woodwind and string instruments.
