An Andreas Renisto violin made by Wenzel Hoyer c.1900, Schönbach (now Luby), Bohemia.
Made in the renowned Schönbach workshops of Wenzel Hoyer, this instrument represents the rich tradition of Bohemian violin making at the turn of the 20th century. Schönbach, a historic center for stringed instrument manufacture, was home to master luthiers whose expertise ensured consistent quality and musicality.
After its initial construction, this violin was imported into Scotland by the respected dealer Jim Tait, who was active in the Scottish Borders during the early 20th century. Tait was known for importing instruments "in the white" (unfinished) and personally applying a high-quality oil varnish, enhancing both the appearance and tonal qualities of each violin. The "Andreas Renisto" label was one of several trade names used by Tait, signifying a select group of instruments that received his finishing touch and were distributed exclusively.
This violin offers a warm, bright, and radiant tone rich in overtones, ideal for advancing players and professionals seeking character and projection.
The attractive back is in two matching pieces of maple of medium curl, descending across the back from the centre joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are of similar, although slightly less pronounced curl. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of medium grain in the centre, broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a golden-orange colour on a warm amber ground.
