“As I began performing regularly with the O’Connor Band, we found ourselves in about every performance environment and climate possible. It became obvious that I needed to upgrade my old cake of rosin. I was introduced to the beautiful Leatherwood Bespoke “Crisp” rosin and immediately fell in love with the sound I was able to produce and the reliability that it gave me wherever I played my violin.”MARK O’CONNOR, GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING VIOLINIST & FOLK FIDDLER
Start with a Set Recipe
Our two set recipes for violin viola and cello offer very distinct sound and response characteristics:
CRISP:
Decisive attack, firm traction, and crisp sautille; this recipe creates an undeniably forthright sound through a glassier texture.
The crisp blend often works well with an instrument with lots of resonance but is a little ‘woolly’ in sound, offering it greater clarity and articulation.
Crisp also assists bows or techniques that struggle to achieve a clear and articulate spiccato or sautille.
Crisp can also assist small student or cheap instruments, by enhancing their sound to be brighter and sometimes louder; and beginning students find it easier to articulate with crisp.
Here’s what our clients think:
“A big sound compared to other rosins…more dramatic…that’s your Carmen fantasy rosin!” – violinist
“It’s giving my violin more sound. Quite attacky, plenty of crispness, very good grip!” – violinist
“It grips the string better! I didn’t have to have so much control over the bow” – violinist
“It has more of a glassy texture, a gutsy sound. There’s more control with this one” – violinist
“It has a very different connection to the string than the usual rosin. Velvety, gliding, but clearly connecting. It’s smooth across string, there’s no feeling of ‘pot holes’ or grittiness.” – violist
“The best so far…makes it way easier to play brightly” – cellist
SUPPLE:
A warm and softer sound, and consistent traction that feels velvety and rich; this recipe maintains a reliably sharp attack on the string.
The supple blend can help generate a more powerful and focused sound from a softer and lighter bow with less ‘bite’.
Supple can also enhance the sounds of a deep / warm-sounding instrument by making it sound more resonant.
Supple can also ‘soften’ an instrument that is too loud, bright, or one-dimensional in sound.
Here’s what our clients think:
“It has more depth, integrity, more sonorous, more body.” – violinist
“Gentle. Entices me to play more Mozarty!” – violinist
“It feels smoother than my original rosin. Subtle. I like it a lot.” – violinist
“It’s good for sustained long bows…nice for soft playing” – violinist
“Warm, yet clear! Much easier to control tone and dynamics!” – cellist
“Gives the softer and lighter bow more articulation and focusI” – cellist
For double bass
Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin currently offers two blends for bass:
Crisp – Solo & recital bass
This blend offers smooth and consistent traction which enhances the sound and overtones in melodic playing. The initial attack is clean, and crisp and offers plenty of bite on 4-string basses for solo, recital, and chamber music settings. This rosin is stable in a range of temperatures, maintaining its shape and texture in a normal range of temperatures. It will only start to soften in exposed to direct sunlight or ambient temperature above 35 degrees Celsius.
Supple – Baroque & soft string bass
This softer blend has a slightly reduced initial stickiness so the vibration of a gut or softer string is not inhibited. It offers consistent and warm traction and is stable in a range of temperatures, maintaining its shape and texture in a normal range of temperatures. It will only start to soften in exposed to direct sunlight or ambient temperature above 35 degrees Celsius.
Orchestral Bass Rosins
We are currently working with around 60 orchestral bass players from around the world to develop a bass rosin suitable for heavy orchestral playing. More information will be released at the end of the trial.
“I have had the pleasure of trying the solo double-bass recipe from Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin. I love the total absence of dust which enhances the sound of my Bass and removes unnecessary noises. The rosin makes you feel he string “under the bow” much more easily, which results in a feeling of better control over the sound. I particularly love the incredible control in piano dynamics! This rosin allows you to feel the difference between ‘ppp’ and ‘mp’ while maintaining control and traction…you can play without any weight and the horsehair grabs the strings easily!” - Orazio Ferrari – Double Bass Soloist, Italy
For baroque violin, viola, cello, bass, viola da gamba, and violone
Enhance the sound of open gut strings
Specially formulated for gut strings, the gentle but clean attack, and smoother traction allows the string to resonate freely with maximum clarity. Baroque rosin makes a bright, clear sound with a feeling that the bow is quicker on the string and makes it easier to play fast with more clarity. The smoother traction allows the string to be played with more intensity without distortion and also reduces the ‘squeak’ often encountered with using modern rosins on gut.
With a baroque bespoke blend, the initial attack can be increased, and the traction thickened (made stickier) for use on thicker strings.
“I can highly recommend Leatherwood Bespoke Rosin, the quality is excellent! The baroque recipe for Viola da Gamba is perfect for a full, beautiful sound, for the whole repertoire." - MADDALENA DEL GOBBO – VIOLA DA GAMBA, DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON ARTIST
