J.T.L. “Buthod, élève de Vuillaume” Virtuoso Cello, c.1900

A fine French cello from the celebrated Mirecourt workshops of Jérôme Thibouville-Lamy (J.T.L.), dating from circa 1890–1910.

This example represents the firm’s sought-after “Virtuoso” model, bearing the distinctive Buthod, élève de Vuillaume Paris label—a mark used by J.T.L. to denote instruments of a higher artistic and tonal standard within their production.

Unlike the more common student-grade instruments associated with the J.T.L. name, the Virtuoso model occupies a significantly elevated tier. These cellos were crafted with greater attention to material selection and finish, often featuring well-figured tonewoods, refined arching, and more carefully executed varnish work. The result is an instrument that offers both visual elegance and a notably more nuanced tonal palette.

The cello displays the classic Mirecourt aesthetic of the late 19th century, with clean workmanship throughout and a warm, attractive varnish. Tonally, it provides a balanced and responsive voice, with a clear, projecting upper register and a rounded, supportive lower end, qualities that make it well suited to advancing students, conservatoire players, or professionals seeking a reliable and characterful French instrument.

Instruments from this period and model tier are increasingly appreciated for their consistency, musical versatility, and excellent value within the French cello market. This example stands as a strong representative of J.T.L.’s higher-grade output, bridging the gap between workshop production and more individually crafted instruments.

The back in two matching pieces of maple of medium curl slightly descending across the back from the center joint. The ribs, pegbpox and scroll of similar curl. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of fine grain in the center broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a rich orange-red color on a light yellow-brown ground.
