15" Viola by Richard Duke, London, c.1770
A particularly attractive and characterful English viola by Richard Duke, London, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century, and branded DUKE / LONDON to the upper back.
Richard Duke was among the best-known London makers of the eighteenth century and headed an important workshop producing violins, violas and cellos for the thriving musical life of Georgian London. His instruments are recognisable for their strongly individual English character and are increasingly appreciated both historically and as fine practical playing instruments.
This viola is particularly interesting for its compact 15-inch body, combined with relatively deep ribs of approximately 34–36 mm and a 202 mm body stop. This gives the instrument generous internal capacity despite its modest body length and makes it an especially attractive proposition for a player seeking the tonal qualities of an old English viola in a comfortable and manageable size.
The instrument has a handsome one-piece maple back, with maple ribs and a characterful scroll, and a spruce front of strong, open grain. It is covered with a warm golden-brown to reddish-brown varnish, retaining considerable texture and attractive natural wear and patination acquired during more than two centuries of use.
Several constructional features are consistent with its eighteenth-century English origins. These include a one-piece lower rib and evidence in the upper block of the instrument's earlier nailed-neck construction. The neck has subsequently been grafted, as is commonly encountered on instruments of this age following their conversion to modern playing requirements.
The broad modelling, strongly formed soundholes and vigorous scroll give the viola considerable visual personality, while the extensive but sympathetic wear to the varnish contributes to its particularly appealing historic appearance.
Despite its compact 15-inch body, this viola has a surprisingly full and mature voice, with a warm, resonant lower register and plenty of character on the C and G strings. The middle register is rich and rounded, while the upper strings remain clear and singing without becoming overly bright.
The relatively deep ribs help give the instrument a breadth and depth of sound that belies its modest dimensions, while the smaller body makes it quick to respond and particularly comfortable to play. There is an attractive slightly dark, woody quality to the sound, characteristic of a good old English viola, together with enough clarity and projection for ensemble and solo playing.
It would particularly suit a player looking for the warmth and complexity of an old viola without the physical demands of a larger instrument.
The back in a single piece of maple of light medium-broad curl running horizontally across the back. The ribs of more pronounced medium curl. The pegbox and scroll of plain maple. The front in a single piece of spruce of broad grain. The varnish of a warm golden orange-brown colour on an amber ground.
Length of back 378 mm
Width upper bout 186 mm
Width middle bout 126 mm
Width lower bout 232mm
