Which strings are on your violin?
Match the coloured silk at the tailpiece and in the pegbox to find possible string makes and ranges. This chart covers 52 violin string ranges, with patterns, colour names and notes to help you distinguish similar strings.
Check both ends of each string. The tailpiece silk is the winding beside the ball or loop; the pegbox silk is the winding around the tuning peg. Players often use mixed sets and a different E string. Unless stated otherwise, the chart shows standard or medium-tension violin strings.
