This refined violin by Georges Mougenot, dated 1888, represents the work of a respected late 19th-century maker associated with the Brussels Conservatoire.

Set in the cultural heart of late 19th-century Brussels, this violin by Georges Mougenot offers a tangible connection to a vibrant European musical tradition. Dated 1888, the instrument was made during Mougenot’s tenure as luthier du Conservatoire Royal, a role that places his work firmly within the artistic life of the Belgian capital at a time of rich musical development.

The instrument bears a signed label reading “Georges Mougenot, luthier du Conservatoire Royal, Bruxelles 1888” and is further authenticated by an internal signature, “Georges Mougenot Bruxelles 1888.” Such dual confirmation adds confidence to its attribution and enhances its appeal for both players and collectors.

Crafted in the refined French-Belgian tradition, the violin displays a confident hand: graceful arching, harmonious proportions, and a varnish that has mellowed beautifully over more than a century. Its surface tells a subtle story of age and careful use, with a warm patina that enhances the natural character of the wood.

In playing, such instruments are often prized for their poise and clarity, responsive under the bow, with a focused, singing tone that carries with ease. It is an instrument equally at home in chamber music as it is in more projecting repertoire, offering both nuance and presence.

Presented in good condition and set up for modern performance, this violin is an elegant example of Brussels craftsmanship from a maker closely tied to one of Europe’s great conservatoires.

The back in two pieces of maple of broad curl descending across the back from the center joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll of similar curl. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of medium-fine grain. The varnish of a rich, luminous reddish-amber color on a amber-brown ground.
