Fine viola by David Rattray, London 2009
After G.B. Guadagnini, Milan 1757 “Cummings”
Discover a refined contemporary viola by British maker David Rattray, crafted in London in 2009 on the celebrated G.B. Guadagnini, Milan 1757 “Cummings” model. This instrument brings together classical Italian inspiration and modern precision, offering a rich, versatile voice suited to advanced students, professionals, and committed amateurs alike.
The elegant Guadagnini model gives a comfortable feel under the chin, with well-judged arching and outline that promote both clarity and depth of tone. A finely flamed maple back, spruce front of even grain, and a transparent golden–brown varnish contribute to an attractive, warm appearance that sits comfortably alongside older Italian and English instruments. The response is quick and even, with a dark, sonorous C string, a warm and focused middle register, and a clear, singing upper range that carries well in ensemble and solo contexts.
Set up in our own workshops to our usual high standard, this viola speaks easily and rewards nuanced bowing and left-hand articulation. It will appeal to players seeking a reliable, characterful instrument with the projection for orchestral and chamber work and the subtlety required for solo repertoire.
Condition: Excellent, with only minor signs of careful professional use
The back in two matching pieces of maple of medium curl descending across the back from the centre joint. The ribs of similar curl, the pegbox and scroll of similar, although somewhat less pronounced curl. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of medium grain in the centre, broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a transparent golden-brown colour on a warm amber-brown ground.
