Viola bow, Markneukirchen, circa 1930
A nickel-mounted viola bow from the Markneukirchen workshops, dating to the early 20th century, and attributable on stylistic grounds to the working methods associated with makers such as Paulus or Schuster. The bow reflects the established Saxon tradition of workshop production, wherein a high level of consistency and craftsmanship was maintained across output intended for both domestic use and export.
The stick is of round section Pernambuco, of medium density, exhibiting a orange-brown hue with a regular and well-defined grain. The head is neatly executed, with a slightly elongated profile and restrained chamfers, characteristic of Markneukirchen work of this period. The proportions and modelling suggest a practical approach to durability and balance rather than overt individuality.
The frog is of ebony, nickel-mounted, and fitted with a pearl eye. The metalwork is cleanly finished, consistent with workshop production. The adjuster is of typical form, with a nickel button and ebony core.
Bows from this milieu were produced in considerable numbers, yet examples of this quality demonstrate the effectiveness of the Markneukirchen system, combining efficiency with a reliable standard of material selection and workmanship. Such bows continue to be valued for their functional playing qualities and as representative artefacts of early 20th-century German bow making.
The round stick of Pernambuco of an orange-brown colour. Nickel-mounted ebony frog inlaid with pearl eyes. Three-part nickel mounted on ebony adjuster inlaid with pearl eye.
