Made in 1977 by Wolfgang Uebel, one of the foremost German specialists for historic musical instruments and in particular those of the viola da gamba family.
Wolfgang Uebel came from one of the oldest violin-making families of the Vogtland region, he was trained by Heinrich Th. Heberlein at the Markneukirchen academy. In 1952 he began working as a trainee under the direction of Peter Harlan in Burg Sternberg, here he was introduced to and developed his love for historic stringed instruments. From 1958 onward, Uebel regularly worked for some of the most renowned museums and institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Hill Collection at the Oxford Ashmolean Museum, the Goethe Institute, and the Rhine state museum in Bonn.

The slightly arched flat back in two pieces maple of medium-fine curl descending across the back in the upper half and running horizontally lower down, single purfled. The ribs of similar curl. The pegbox and open scroll of plain maple with extensive relief carving. The front in two pieces of spruce of broad grain and flame holes. The varnish of a rich red-orange colour on a yellow ground.
