Fine Violin Bow, Silver Mounted by Ben Conover
Made for the serious violinist, this silver-mounted bow by Ben Conover offers a fast, clean response and a broad dynamic range, ideal for players who need both power and finesse in equal measure. The bow will need a stronger player, but in the right hands it produces a great, resonant tone with excellent projection.
Maker
Ben Conover is a contemporary bow maker known for combining classic French models with a clear, player-led approach to balance and response. Working in the tradition of 19th-century archetiers, he pays close attention to camber, weight distribution, and feel in the hand, producing bows that are built to meet the tonal and technical demands of modern professional playing.
Head and articulation
The head after Henry gives the stick a poised, confident feel at the tip, helping the player draw a focused sound without forcing, even at the extreme upper third. This design supports articulate spiccato and sautillé, while still allowing generous, sustained tones for lyrical passages.
Frog height and balance
The higher frog is set to give a secure hand position and a slightly elevated feeling under the thumb, which many players experience as extra leverage and stability in the lower half. This promotes easy control in martelé, collé, and fast detaché, with a balance that feels natural from the heel through to the middle of the bow.
Octagonal adjuster and feel
The octagonal adjuster, worked inside as well as out in the manner of Persoit and other great French makers, adds a subtle tactile reference point at the back of the stick. This detail contributes to a refined, connected feel between hand and bow, helping the player sense minute changes in tension for precise control over bounce, bite, and release.
Personality
Overall, this bow will suit advanced students, professionals, and keen amateurs with a solid right-hand technique who are looking for a stick that tracks the hand closely and opens up colour, articulation, and projection without extra effort. It is a compelling partner for players who want a responsive, characterful bow that can move seamlessly from delicate chamber work to full-blooded orchestral and solo repertoire.
