Fine French bow Chanot, probably made by Mathias Theophile Auguste Barbé
Experience the elegance and precision of a French violin bow crafted in the renowned workshops of Georges Chanot, one of the 19th century’s most celebrated violin makers. This bow, stamped ‘CHANOT’ on the shaft, is a testament to the high standards and artistry that defined the Chanot legacy in Paris and London.
Made in the workshops of Georges Chanot, a master luthier whose instruments and bows are highly sought after, and may represent the fine work of Mathias Théophile Auguste Barbé, a distinguished French archetier known for his collaboration with leading Parisian ateliers, including Gand & Bernardel and the Chanot shop in the late 19th century.
Playability: A strong yet flexible stick, the bow offers excellent balance and agility, making it suitable for both soloists and orchestral musicians.
About Georges Chanot
Georges Chanot was a pivotal figure in French violin making, celebrated for his meticulous workmanship and innovative designs. His bows, though less numerous than his instruments, are recognized for their robust construction and elegant finish, often favoured by professional players for their reliability and tonal quality.
About Mathias Theophile Auguste Barbé
Barbé (1853–1902) was a master bow maker from Mirecourt, France, who trained under the Bazin family and later worked for Gand & Bernardel in Paris. His bows are admired for their lightness, responsiveness, and refined French sound, often drawing comparisons to the celebrated François Nicolas Voirin. Barbé’s work for the Chanot workshop is particularly valued for its blend of strength, agility, and nuanced tonal colour.
