This violin is featured on pages 98 and 99 in David Rattray's wonderful book on Violin Making in Scotland 1750-1950.

Robert Ballantyne was a talented violin maker from Scotland who operated in Glasgow from 1841 until his demise in 1870. Born in Hulton Knowe, near Glasgow, in 1796, it is speculated that he may have apprenticed under the renowned violin maker, Thomas Hardie, in Edinburgh, as their work displays noticeable similarities.

Ballantyne's violins are renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and resonant sound. He meticulously selected high-quality materials and devoted great attention to detail in the construction of his instruments. Due to his deliberate approach, the number of Ballantyne violins in existence today is relatively scarce, estimated to be only a few hundred instruments produced throughout his lifetime.

Presently, Ballantyne's violins are highly coveted by collectors and musicians alike. They are celebrated for their commanding and expressive tone, making them ideal for solo performances and chamber music.

In his book "The Violin Makers of the Guarneri Family (1626-1762)," esteemed violin maker and expert William E. Hill shared his thoughts on Ballantyne:

"Robert Ballantyne was an accomplished Glasgow maker active between approximately 1840 and 1860. His instruments exhibit superb craftsmanship and possess a delightful tone. It is evident that he drew inspiration from the work of Thomas Hardie, as his violins often bear a resemblance to those crafted by him."

The legacy of Robert Ballantyne endures through his remarkable violins, which continue to captivate musicians and enthusiasts with their superb artistry and captivating sound.

This is a wonderful example of Ballantyne's work.
