Johann Georg Thir, Baroque Violin, Vienna, c.1760–1780
A rare and exceptionally well-preserved original baroque violin by Johann Georg Thir, one of the leading makers of the eighteenth-century Viennese school. Of considerable historical importance, the instrument retains an extraordinary degree of its original construction: the original baroque neck, original bass bar, original lower saddle and the characteristic nail-fixed top block all survive. It is exceptionally unusual to find these defining features preserved together in an instrument of this age and quality.
The violin displays the elegant and highly recognisable workmanship associated with Thir. Its compact scroll has narrow chamfers, softly rounded volute turns and the distinctive geometry of the Viennese pegbox. The corners are neatly formed, with short, rounded mitres and fine purfling set close to the edge. Clean, compact rib mitres and a softly oval button further support the attribution, corresponding closely with authenticated examples of the maker’s work.
The arching, f-hole design and overall outline are characteristic of eighteenth-century Vienna and closely aligned with known instruments by Johann Georg Thir. The varnish is a particularly attractive warm brown-amber, retaining a gentle natural patina and sympathetic wear consistent with its age and careful preservation.
The violin bears a period Stainer label, entirely in keeping with Viennese practice of the period. Jacob Stainer’s influence on Viennese makers was profound, and his name was frequently used in instruments made within that tradition.
A dendrochronological examination provides compelling supporting evidence, showing strong cross-matches with spruce used in Mittenwald, including wood associated with the Klotz family, as well as notable correlations with Johann Georg Thir.
This is a museum-grade baroque violin of exceptional originality, ideally suited to historically informed performance at the highest level. It will also be of considerable interest to collectors, institutions and players seeking an authentic, untouched example of Viennese craftsmanship from the golden age of baroque violin making.
Sound and playing character
Despite its exceptional state of preservation, this violin is a highly rewarding musical instrument. Its voice is clear, immediate and finely focused, with the quick articulation and natural transparency prized in historically informed performance. The original baroque construction gives the sound a direct, vocal quality, combining a sweet, resonant treble with a warm and characterful lower register.
The instrument responds readily under the bow and offers excellent clarity in articulated passagework, while retaining enough depth and colour for expressive solo playing. Its refined tonal palette is particularly well suited to eighteenth-century repertoire, chamber music and orchestral performance on period instruments.
