Baroque Violin by Lorraine Bitaud

Inspired by the 1564 Andrea Amati “Charles IX” Violin at the Ashmolean Museum

An exquisite baroque violin, handcrafted by Lorraine Bitaud and meticulously modelled after the legendary Andrea Amati “Charles IX” violin of 1564, preserved in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

A Living Legacy of Andrea Amati
Andrea Amati, the pioneering Cremonese luthier, is widely regarded as the originator of the modern violin. His 1564 “Charles IX” violin—commissioned for the French royal court—is the earliest dated violin known to survive, setting the standard for all future violin making. Lorraine Bitaud’s instrument faithfully recreates the proportions, arching, and elegant details that define Amati’s vision, which produces a warm, resonant tone.

Baroque Setup for Authentic Performance
This violin is set up in true baroque style, ideal for historically informed performance. Its design supports the nuanced articulation and expressive range required for 16th- and 17th-century repertoire.

Lorraine Bitaud was born in central France into a family of woodworkers and is a musician herself, which drew her to violin making from an early age, moving to England in 2006 to study at the renowned Newark School of Violin Making, graduating in 2010.

After graduation, Lorraine spent nine years working for major restoration workshops in London and across the UK, where she honed her expertise in the restoration of violins, violas, and cellos.

The back in two pieces of maple of light medium curl slightly descending across the back from the center joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll of similar curl. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of fine grain in the center broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a pale amber-brown color on a light-brown ground.
