Baroque Viola by Bryan Maynard, after Gasparo da Salò
A striking Baroque viola by Bryan Maynard, modelled after the work of Gasparo da Salò. The instrument draws on the bold, broad-shouldered Brescian style associated with Gasparo’s celebrated violas, combining strong visual presence with the generous, dark-toned sound for which this model is especially prized.
Its rich lower register, open and resonant middle voice, and powerful yet characterful projection make it highly suitable for seventeenth- and eighteenth-century consort, chamber and orchestral repertoire. The instrument responds readily to a Baroque bow, with clarity of articulation alongside warmth and depth of colour.
Formerly the property of the distinguished early-music violinist and violist Judy Tarling, this viola formed part of her professional working collection. Tarling was a member of the Parley of Instruments and an important figure in Britain’s historically informed performance movement, appearing widely in concert and on recordings.
Her recorded work with the Parley of Instruments includes John Dowland: Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares CDA66637, Four and Twenty Fiddlers: Music for the Restoration Court Band CDA66667, A High-Priz’d Noise: Violin Music for Charles I CDA66806, Musique of Violenze CDA66929, and Michael Praetorius: Dances from Terpsichore
CDA67240.
An appealing opportunity to acquire a finely made modern Baroque viola in an important Brescian model, with a full, richly coloured sound and excellent professional provenance.
The back in two matching pieces of maple of medium curl ascending across the back from the center joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll of similar curl. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of medium grain. The varnish of a war, golden orange-brown color on a light yeallow-brown ground.
