Lockey Hill was a renowned British violin maker born in 1756 and died in 1810. He was the fifth son of Joseph Hill, who was also a skilled violin maker. Lockey Hill specialized in creating trade instruments, often working for firms like Longman & Co. or Longman & Broderip. These instruments were of a similar quality to his father's less intricate work, featuring a delicate varnish and painted purfling.

After the passing of his father in 1796, Lockey Hill returned to the family workshop located in Southwark. It was during this period that he produced some exceptional instruments, many of which were modeled after the renowned Italian violin maker, Stradivari. These instruments showcased Hill's impressive craftsmanship and attention to detail, often displaying a remarkable resemblance to antique violins.

Throughout his career, Lockey Hill established himself as an accomplished violin maker, contributing significantly to the legacy of his family's craft. His trade instruments reflected the expertise passed down from his father, while his later works demonstrated his own artistic flair and ability to recreate the timeless beauty of Stradivari's designs.

Lockey Hill's dedication to his craft and his commitment to producing high-quality instruments solidified his reputation as one of the most notable violin makers of his time.
