Baroque Cello by Ruediger Wolf 2002

This 2002 Baroque cello by Rüdiger Wolf exemplifies the German luthier’s mastery in crafting instruments for historically informed performance. Known for their clarity, transparency, and richly nuanced resonance, Wolf’s cellos respond with agility and precision, producing a strong fundamental tone complemented by a warm, singing harmonic spectrum.

The instrument delivers a clear, focused sound with a crisp attack, ideal for the articulate phrasing and expressive ornamentation central to Baroque repertoire. Its lower register offers a rounded, sonorous depth on the C and G strings, maintaining definition without undue resonance. Across all positions, the cello responds evenly, allowing for subtle dynamic control and tonal colouration.

The upper strings sing with sweetness and lyrical grace, making the instrument well-suited for solo passages while ensuring balanced integration within ensemble settings. Equally effective in continuo and solo roles, this cello embodies the versatility, clarity, and historical authenticity that define Rüdiger Wolf’s acclaimed work.

Baroque cello with carved lions head.  The back in two matching pieces of maple of faint medium curl, slightly ascending across the back from the centre joint, the pegbox of similar curl mounted with a fine carved lion's head, the ribs of somewhat more pronounced medium curl.  The front in two matching pieces of spruce of medium grain in the centre, becoming finer towards the flanks.  The varnish of a rich orange-brown colour on a yellow ground.
