Baroque cello by Kai-Thomas Roth, 1997

A compelling modern interpretation of one of the most celebrated instruments in the cello repertoire: the Giovanni Battista Guadagnini cello of 1740, famously played by Steven Isserlis. Roth, a highly respected German maker known for his meticulous craftsmanship and historical sensitivity, captures the character and elegance of the Guadagnini model while delivering a responsive and reliable instrument for today’s performer.

This cello reflects a deep understanding of period construction and performance practice. The model’s slightly compact proportions and refined arching contribute to a focused, articulate sound with exceptional clarity, qualities particularly suited to early music repertoire. At the same time, it offers enough warmth and depth to satisfy players seeking expressive versatility.

The tone is direct and speaking, with a quick response under the bow and a pleasingly complex core. The lower register is resonant without becoming heavy, while the upper register sings with a clear, projecting sweetness. This balance makes it an excellent choice for continuo work, chamber music, and solo performance on period instruments.

Craftsmanship is of a high standard throughout, with clean, confident workmanship and an attractive varnish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood. Roth’s instruments are valued for their consistency and musical reliability, and this example is no exception.

An ideal instrument for the advancing Baroque specialist or modern cellist exploring historically informed performance, this cello offers both authenticity and playability in equal measure.

The back in a single piece of slab cut English willow. The ribs, pegbox and scroll of English sycamore of medium curl. The front of two matching pieces of Balkan spruce of medium-fine grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a rich orange-brown colour on a light yellow ground.
