An Important English Cello by the Workshop of John Betts
London, circa 1810
Showing the hand of Bernhard Simon Fendt Senior
The instrument is made on a broad Italianate model, with a two-piece back of figured maple and ribs of similar wood, the table of two pieces of spruce. It is covered with a rich reddish-brown varnish over a warm golden ground.
The cello combines the increasingly sophisticated influence of Stradivari apparent in the leading London workshops of this period with traditional English construction. The internal maple linings terminate against the corner blocks rather than being mortised into them, a method documented as continuing in the work of Betts and the Fendts.
The particularly accomplished scroll, with its balanced concentric volute, restrained chamfers and deeply worked rear fluting, is consistent with characteristics associated with the work of Bernhard Simon Fendt Senior.
The instrument bears the stamp BETTS / LONDON beneath the button on the back and on the lower ribs beneath the endpin.
This cello speaks readily and evenly, with a full, rounded tone that is both warm and clearly defined. The bass register is generous and resonant, while the upper range remains focused and responsive, giving a well-balanced voice across the instrument’s compass. It offers a satisfying blend of depth and projection, suiting both solo work and ensemble playing, and rewards nuanced bowing with a colourful, expressive sound.
Dendrochronological examination by Peter Ratcliff Dendrochronology Ltd records the latest clearly identifiable annual ring in the table as 1741–42. The spruce shows strong correlations with Alpine timber from Switzerland and southern Austria of a type extensively imported into Britain and used by English makers. The dendrochronological findings are compatible with the proposed date.
Length of back: 741 mm
Width upper bouts: 358 mm
Width middle bouts: 248 mm
Width lower bouts: 435 mm
Stop length: 390 mm
Rib heights: 111.5–113 mm
The original scroll has been retained with a conventional later neck graft. The instrument has undergone restoration appropriate to its age; a detailed condition report is available.
The back in two matching pieces of maple of medium curl descending across the back from the center joint. Stamped ‘BETTS LONDON’ beneath the button. The ribs, pegbox and scroll of similar curl. The front in to pieces of spruce of medium grain in the centre broadening at the flanks. The varnish of a rich, dark red-brown colour on a golden amber-brown ground.
