Xue Ping Hu, Beijing, Edn. No. 06

Xueping Hu is a master Chinese Luthier, a gifted maker of violin, viola and cello. During the 1980’s, he served as a pupil in the workshops of Quan Zheng, the renowned violin making Master of China.

In 1993, Xueping Hu started his own workshop in Beijing, China, his originality began to show through with his alterations of Strad’s models with a light, transparent golden varnish. In the past 14 years , the arching was changed, the various degrees of thickness in the wood were more exactly determined, and the wonderful oil varnish was more highly colored.

From 2003 to 2007, he has been receiving special instruction from a famous French violin maker. It was during this time that he perfected his violin design, creating violins that blended the qualities of dark, rich tones of his previous instruments with brighter sounds that can carry. The materials used also helped to create these unique effects.  Selecting excellent aged European wood, developing lustrous, pliable varnish that has became a trademark of his work.  Various Italian models being added to his port folio making each year, improving on the way he finished varnish different to the traditional French oil varnishing. This varnishing style, not only makes an instruments appearance unique, beautiful looking, but also produces a very robust yet sensitive quality sound. Xuepings cello also underwent a similar transformation during these years. Strad, Montagnana and Guadagnini copies for the growing demand among musicians and solo performers who want to get a smaller instrument and more expressive tone. In January 2004, Yo-Yo Ma used his cello to perform with musicians from the Silk Road Ensemble at the Peabody Essex Museum and expressed his surprise that the instrument was made by a Chinese luthier.

In 2006, Xueping’s violin was awarded A Certificate of Merit for Violin Tone at the International Violin Making Competition held by Violin Society of America.
