Venetian violin maker Luigi Fabris 1809 – 1889. Member of a well-known musical family in Venice, probably trained with Oietro Valentino Novello, who was a close neighbour, or Antonio Indri, who were the only active makers in Venice at that time. Resident from 1831-1841 at 879 Calle San Giovanni and for the rest of his life at 1019 Campiello delle Stroppe.

The following years were challenging for Fabris, who struggled with problems of heavy taxation and political upheaval, persistent illness afflicted his family, and he lost two wives and two children by 1844. By about 1850 economic pressures forced him to take employment with Giuseppe Camploy, a general retailer of musical instruments and a keen collector. In 1856 began marketing instrument varnish, in all probability of his own devising, designed to penetrate the wood fibres and enhance its acoustic properties

A fine and handsome Violin bearing the makers original label.

The attractive two-piece back of maple of light medium-fine curl descending across the back from the centre joint, the ribs, peg box and scroll of similar curl. The table in two pieces of spruce of fine grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a rich orange-red colour on a yellow ground.
