Violin By Eugene Langonet Paris 1909
Eugène Langonet born 1875 Mirecourt son of a violin maker. Youngest brother of Charles François Langonet. He made his apprenticeship at Chipot-Vuillaume’s workshop, he then went to Paul Mangenot’s before joining his brother at Hills in London. Subsequently returned to France to worked for Sylvestre and Maucotel in Paris. Established independently at Rue de l’Heronniere in Nantes from 1910. Silver medal at Nantes Exhibition 1924.
The Langonet Dynasty were a family of violin makers originating in Mirecourt, France, from around 1737 until the late 1900s.
The family can possibly be traced back to an Antoine Lantonet of Commercy who started work at Mirecourt in 1737 and subsequently altered his name to Langonet. In 1955 Alfred Charles Langonet possessed a violin labelled ‘Antoine Lantonnet, 1770’ which suggests the maker experimented with various versions of the name before settling on Langonet.
In 1926 he won the gold medal as “Meilleur Ouvrier de France” (best craftsman of France).
The two piece back of maple of medium-fine curl descending across the back from the centre joint, the ribs, peg box and scroll of similar curl. The two piece front of spruce of fine grain. The varnish of a warm amber orange-brown colour on a yellow ground.
