Violin Bow by Louis Joseph Morizot Freres

Bow maker 1937 – 1970, of the six sons of prolific and successful Mirecourt bow maker Louis Joseph Morizot, known as Morizot Père, five sons continued the tradition and served their apprenticeships under their father before becoming his collaborators and worked in partnership. They each specialized in different types of bows or features of the bow making process, this enabled them to produce a remarkable number of bows.  Marcel roughed out the sticks, Georges finished them.   André Auguste devoted himself to high quality gold and silver mounted bows and cambering of the sticks, Paul Charles concentrated on the frogs.  Louis Gabriel was responsible for bass bows and frogs.

The workshop trained a number of great makers who bridged the transition between the traditional and contemporary French schools, including Jean-Jacques and Bernard Millant.

The Morizot workshop closed circa 1970 when André Morizot joined his brother René, a violin maker, in his workshop located in the family house at 8 rue Saint Georges in Mirecourt. André Morizot assured a steady production until his death in 1978.

Three different stamps have been used by this workshop: two small stamps that read “L. MORIZOT” with different characters, and one large stamp that reads “L. MORIZOT”

Alongside their own production, one can find bows from the Morizot Fréres workshop bearing the following brands:

Aubry, Georges Apparut, Paul Bisch, A. Deblaye, P.Hel, Lupot, M. Millant, R&M Millant, D. Moinel,

Moinel Cherpitel, Perelli, Pillot, Rodier A Paris, Tourte.
