The original Tourte mute is by far the most popular orchestral mute.
Beware of imitations, these do not offer the same functionality, longevity and above all sound quality, most importantly these inferior copies rattle!
The original Tourte orchestra mute is designed for ease of use, it sits permanently on the strings between A and D string ready for use. You will never lose this one.
What to look for in a Mute.
Most string players have at least one mute, and there are two important factors to consider.
- Ease of use. How quickly can the mute be put in place or removed? Orchestral players may have only a moment to install or remove a mute.
- Sound quality. The purpose of the mute is to reduce the volume only, not diminish or sacrifice tone the good quality.
