Rectified plain gut strings – oiled

Rectified plain gut strings are at the origin of the company that has two centuries and half experience in this field.

They embody the combination of traditional processes and modern Technology, which guarantees their qualities.

The methods of polishing improved as technical progress allowed.
Formerly polished manually, the strings were then polished to a precision of 0,05 mm by using grinding machines.
Today gut is rectified on “centerless” machines with a precision or more or less 0,005 mm.

Characteristics obtained thanks to the polishing process:

  • – suited sonority sought for the early music, an increased projection of sound and an harmonic spectrum that fits the range of the traditional historical instruments
  • – a perfect intonation
  • – a large choice of diameters, allowing to provide the best suitable strings according to the instrument tuning, the reference pitch i.e. A= 415 or A=440, and the various instrument sizes.

Oiled ou varnished, strings are available in two types:

We recommend the use of:

  • – OILED gut (BRH) on the bowed instruments

Available in length of 1.20 metre up to diameter 1.50 mm (0,0590 inches) included and 1.50 metre up to diameter 2.25°mm (0,0886 inches).

See the recapitulative chart of the diameters, lengths and references.

Wound gut

The wound gut strings are more especially intended for bowed instruments but also used on lutes, vihuelas… They are the natural complement to and match perfectly with plain gut strings to give a perfect balance and sound homogeneity.

Like the plain gut strings they offer indisputable sound qualities and perfect intonation. They come in a large choice of diameters.

As the winding techniques have been improved, the string life has been increased.

Savarez has developed 2 series of wound gut strings:

    • Copper Wound Gut (Ref. BFC- For references and mass (PUL) see the chart)
Copper was one of the first metals used.
Copper gives a traditional sound with a clear enriched tone.
    • Silver plated Wound Gut (Ref. BFA- For references and mass (PUL) see the chart)
These wound strings are composed of a thicker gut core wrapped with a smaller proportion of metal, thus giving a warmer round sound. As we use traditional techniques of production there is no interface (no silk layer wound on the gut core) except for 4 strings referred under codes BFA484 – BFA854 – BFA934 – BFA 1474.
These strings were especially designed for bass viols (of approximately 69cm vibrating length) and baroque cellos, because they enhance the balance between the plain gut strings and the wound gut strings.

Length = 1.20 meters.

Diameters/PUL (linear density)

Rather than to mention the diameter, we specify the linear density (PUL) of each string in order to determine the choice of the string according to the desired tension. Depending on their composition two strings can have a similar linear density (PUL) but not necessarily the same diameter, but they will sound with the same tension; and the other way around two strings that have the same diameter can have a different linear density (PUL) and will not sound with the same tension.
