Length of back 428mm 16 3/4'

Width upper bout 203mm

Width middle bout 133mm

Width lower bout 246mm.

Dendrochronological test results: For the main section, which has a grain orientation from the right towards the left, ending at the joint with the bass side wing, I measure 214 rings, and the latest dates from A.D.1619.

Cross-matches obtained with the main section are:
Fake Goffriller model viola made from old wood, Matteo Sellas guitar, 1670 Jacob Stainer violin, early 1600s guitar, possibly Venetian, viola attributed to G.Grancino, a Viennese "bassetto" by D.I.Stadlmann, a Bavarian violin labelled Stainer (not Stainer), a guitar by Matteo Sellas, a mid-18th century violin possibly Florentine, Stradivari "Hill" guitar, a viola attributed to early Italian school, violin follower of J.Stainer, Brothers Amati violin, 17th-century violin probably Dutch, Jacob Stainer violin, Jacob Stainer viola, 1582 Paduan lute by Vendelio Venere, mid-17th century Turin school violin, 1602 Thoerbo by G.Tessler, etc..

For the wing, which is from a different tree to the main part of the belly, I was able to measure 127 rings, and the latest at the joint dates from A.D.1592.

Cross-matches obtained with the wood on the wing are with Jacob Stainer violin, Guarneri filius Andreae, another Jacob Stainer, then a cross-match with the main portion of the same belly, 1664 Jacob Stainer, Girolamo Amati, Matteo Sellas guitar, English cello Joseph Hill school, Stainer viola, early guitar probably Venetian, Anton Posh, c.1720 Georg Aman, 1676 Leonhard Pratter guitar (Prague), viola probably Italian early 17th century, etc...

Essentially, with an overall dendrochronological date of 1619, the front of this viola could have been made from about the mid-1620s onward.

The response seen in this analysis is similar to the ones often seen when early 17th-century wood dates are identified. The results tend to be far less specific than those obtained with late 17th-century and 18th-century wood. It is likely that Alpine wood from the Austrian Alps, south of Fussen, was traded with many workshops in Germany, Austria, and Italy, possibly via the contacts of the many Fussen instrument makers who settled in Italy.
