Henry Jay (Jaye) II worked in London c. 1740 – 1776
Henry Jay was a very fine viola da gamba maker based in London during the 18th century. His training was probably with Peter Walmsley, his first workshop was in Long Acre, Covent Garden, from 1740 and later, from around 1766, in Windmill Street, Piccadilly. Many of his instruments were sold through the firm of Longman & Co (later Longman Lukey & Co and Longman & Broderip), their brand can be found under the back button of some Jay instruments.
It is branded on the upper back beneath the button with the brand of Longman & Lukey, Cheapside, for whom it was made.
The back in two matching pieces of quarter-swan maple of faint medium curl running horizontally across the back from the centre joint. The ribs marked with a somewhat more pronounced curl. The pegbox and scroll of plain maple. The front in two matching pieces of spruce of medium grain in the centre broadening towards the flanks. The varnish of a warm, orange-brown colour on an amber ground.

For international returns, including those from the European Union and other parts of the world, it is important to use a duty-paid service when shipping back items. Any returns sent via a duty unpaid option will not be accepted. It is recommended to pack the items securely, removing the delivery label but using the original packaging if possible. Please note that we do not cover the costs for returns, so it is your responsibility to use a suitable international tracked service.
