Violin maker (?. 1761 – 1810)
George along with his brother John Barton were both makers for the London trade. George established at Wych Street from 1776-1794, then moved to 23 Shoemaker Row until 1801, and finally worked at the sign of the Star in Elliot Court, Old Bailey. He largely made for London shops. Instruments can be variable quality, towards the close of the eighteenth-century changes in style can be seen reflecting current fashion, some of his best were Stainer copies consistent with the best grades sold by Charles & Samuel Thompson.
Charles and Samuel Thompsons’ shop and workshop flourished from around 1763 in London. They were the sons and successors of Peter Thompson who was active in London from 1738, he worked at various signs including ‘Violin, Hautboy, & German Flute’, ‘Violin & German Flute’, ‘Viol & Hautboy’.
The sons Charles and Samuel worked at the ‘Sign of the Bass Violin’ in St Paul’s Churchyard, London.
The back in two pieces of maple of strong very fine curl descending across the back from bass down towards the treble flank. The ribs, pegbox, and scroll of similar curl. The front in two pieces of spruce of medium-broad grain. The varnish of rich, dark golden orange-brown colour on a yellow ground.

INTERNATIONAL RETURNS
For international returns, including those from the European Union and other parts of the world, it is important to use a duty-paid service when shipping back items. Any returns sent via a duty unpaid option will not be accepted. It is recommended to pack the items securely, removing the delivery label but using the original packaging if possible. Please note that we do not cover the costs for returns, so it is your responsibility to use a suitable international tracked service.
